Free Crochet Pattern - Afghan Blanket.

Mix & match your Yarn Remnants into a boisterous Afghan Blanket

Free Afghan crochet blanket pattern I just cannot resist buying yarn! I love the textures and colours, and let's face it, if the same colour yarn from two different dye-lots may not match, the chance of me ending up with too much of the same colour is pretty slim!

(Well, that's what I tell myself when I come home with more yarn.)

Using this free crochet pattern allows you to justify buying more yarn because Afghan blankets are a never ending work-in-progress, always requiring more yarn.

At first they pass as a knee rug, then a TV blanket, then a picnic blanket, then a single bed cover, then a double then a king-size cover... then you begin your next Afghan! So you never have to feel guilty about buying more yarn ever again - AWESOME!

Free Afghan crochet blanket pattern With mix-and-match Afghan blankets, anything goes, YOU make the rules.

I love using 100's of bright vivid colours but you could make a stunning blanket using shades of the same colour or pick a colour scheme of a few complimentary colours.

Then have fun playing around with different patterns for the mix'n match effect.

This free crochet pattern is a great project for a beginner too, because as far as I'm concerned, you can do no wrong! Even some of the ugliest blocks I have made, have ended up included in a blanket and, in the right spot, look quite amazing!

Free crochet Afghan blanket pattern Mix and match your crochet blocks to create a random pattern.

Sew them together as described in our Free Crochet Guide.

Feel free to send in your own brilliant block ideas. I'll make them up following your directions and if they turn out looking great, I'll include them here too.

Being an 'Aussie', I will be using the Australian(UK) abreviations. If you'd like to use the American abreviations or to refresh your crochet knowledge visit our Free, Illustrated Learn how to Crochet Guide

Alright, enjoy your free crochet pattern with our compliments.
Off we go - happy crocheting!

Free Afghan crochet pattern - Granny Square

'Granny Square Block':

These can be used by anyone not just grannies ,of course. They are very versatile too. I like making rows of little 2 round Granny-squares ( only 2 colours) and also clusters of 3 round Granny-squares (use 3 colours) using all sorts of colour combinations. When I made my first ever Mix & Match Afghan crochet blanket, we had gone on a caravan holiday and it rained the entire weekend. I made 168 granny blocks and then I had fun, mixing & matching them in all sorts of patterns.

I have also made large Granny-Square blocks (up to 10 rounds/colours !) and if I'm feeling really lazy , I crochet a Granny Square block in just one colour so I don't even have to change colour and sew in threads!

To begin:Ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring.

Round 1:Ch 3 (counts as 1st tr), 2 tr into centre of ring. *ch 2, 3 tr into centre of ring* Repeat between the ** two more times, ending with ch 2. Join to the top of the ch at beg of round. End off 1st colour.

Round 2:With 2nd colour, in the 2 ch space of round 1, [ch3 (counts as 1st tr), 2 tr, ch 2, 3 tr] this forms a 'corner'. *In the next space, work 3 tr, 2 ch, 3 tr*. Repeat bet the ** two more times. Join with a sl st to the top of the chain at beg of round. End off.

Round 3:With 3rd colour, in the corner space of previous round, [ch3 (counts as 1st tr), 2 tr, ch 2, 3 tr] this forms a 'corner'. Work 3 tr between each 3 tr group on the sides of the granny square. In each 'corner' work [ 3 tr, 2 ch, 3 tr}. Join with a sl st to the top of the chain at beg of round. End off.

Continue in this way, making as many rounds as you like!

Free Afghan crochet pattern block 1 'Maltese Cross Block':

I have seen this traditional pattern called many names, my granny called it a Maltese cross block.

Whatever it's called, it makes a beautifully textured block, with just one colour. I make a couple of these at a time and intersperse them between my brighter blocks as I sew them all together.
